Year 5

11+
11+ exams are taken at the beginning of Year 6 (from October to February) and are offered by selective state schools such as Tiffin Girls, Tiffin Boys, Sutton Grammars, and most independent schools such as Hampton Boys, LEH, Surbiton High School and Halliford School.
The competition for places at some schools is fierce. Almost 2,000 children compete to pass round one of the Tiffin exams. 500 places are offered for round two. From this, 180 students are selected for Year 7. The independent schools vary in the intensity of competition but still have a selection process.

The tests comprise Mathematics, English (including comprehension and creative writing) and sometimes Verbal and Non-Reasoning. Some schools publish example exam papers whilst others vary their assessment criteria each year.
With this in mind, it is important to teach your child a broad range of knowledge and exam techniques in order to answer any type of exam question.
What I offer
For Year 5, I run a course from September, in a small group, for 1.5 hours per week, face-to-face. Subject to passing a baseline assessment, students are taught an advanced level of mathematics, how to plan and structure a variety of writing genres, basic VR and Non-VR skills, and exam techniques. Students have to want to pass these exams in order to cope with the pace and increased demands of homework but the support, gentle competition, and fun within the group is a wonderful motivator.
